As the heat of summer began to settle in, two of our INU NOMADS members—I (Mahfuz) and Sherin— decided it was time for a refreshing escape. With the goal of being close to nature and the ocean, we chose Gangneung for a one-day summer trip— and it turned out to be the perfect decision.

🐑 Starting the Day with Sheep and Serenity at Daegwallyeong Ranch

We kicked off the day at Daegwallyeong Sheep Ranch, a scenic, peaceful spot high in the hills. The wide pastures, cool breeze, and photogenic sheep made it feel like we were back in our home country—calm and grounded.

We couldn’t resist taking photos, especially with the amazing natural backdrop. A funny (and heartwarming) moment: every time we asked a Korean person to take our photo, they not only helped but also made friendly small talk, often complimenting our Korean. These spontaneous interactions are always special. At one spot, there was a floor dedicated for visitors to write something. Of course, we left a small mark—"INU NOMADS"—as a memory.

☕ Unexpected Views, Coffee, and Conversation

While driving, we stumbled upon an observatory with a cute little coffee cart parked nearby. We paused, sipped coffee, and took in the breathtaking mountain view. A pair of binoculars stood ready to offer a closer look — the kind of roadside gem you never plan for but always remember.

🛍️ Local Flavors at Gangneung Jungang Market

Next, we headed to the bustling Gangneung Jungang Market, where we wandered through narrow lanes lined with colorful food stalls and traditional shops.

We tried tteok (rice cakes)—especially meaningful because Sherin had only tried them once before. I introduced her to a few different types that I personally enjoy.

Along the way, I also snapped a picture of a surprisingly aesthetic 7-Eleven—the kind of detail I always notice when something feels different or uniquely local.

For lunch, we stopped by a cozy restaurant and had Yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) and Galbitang (beef rib soup) — the perfect hearty meal to fuel the rest of our trip.

🌊 Afternoon at Anmok Beach — Clear Waters and Kind Strangers

In the afternoon, we arrived at Anmok Beach. The water was crystal clear, seaweed was visible, and the ocean breeze was the perfect antidote to city life.

One exciting moment: I saw a jellyfish alive in the water — my first time ever seeing one in real life at the beach!

Later, while we were walking along the beachfront, we came across a group of older people dancing and singing. One kind woman approached us, curious, and invited us to join. One by one, she danced with us, and we ended up having a long conversation — laughing, connecting, and sharing stories. These moments of unexpected connection are what make trips like this unforgettable.

☕ A Sunset Coffee and the Journey Home

Before heading home, we planned to grab a quick takeaway coffee for the long drive. But right next to the beach, we found a beautiful café that felt too perfect to skip. So we spent our final two hours, sipping coffee, chatting, and watching the ocean in night!

After that, we began the 3.5-hour drive back— tired but deeply refreshed.

This day trip was amazing! From playful sheep and local food to ocean views and kind strangers. June’s INU NOMADS adventure was full of stories we’ll remember for a long time.
